Trust Henry Smith Plumbing, Heating & Cooling!

Is there a point in your home’s plumbing line where the collection point is below the sewage line, like a basement bathroom with a toilet and sink? If this is the case, you’ll need a pump to bring the water and waste that’s collected in these locations up to ground level so it can be safely disposed of in your sewer. This is the job of your sump pump, sewage ejector, or grinder pump. These crucial devices need to work properly in order to keep your home entirely protected, and that’s why it’s important to make sure they are professionally serviced by the Elkhart pump plumbing professionals at Henry Smith Plumbing, Heating & Cooling!

Sump Pumps

Sump pumps are responsible for collecting groundwater that threatens to flood your basement and pumping it away to where it can safely be disposed of. The pump is installed at the lowest point of your basement, where it can collect water in a sump basin. When the water level in the basin gets high enough, it pushes a float upward which turns on the pump to carry the water away.

Sump pumps prevent everything from groundwater in rainfall to burst pipes beneath your basement from causing this room to suffer serious water damage or flood completely. We offer both installation of new or replacement sump pump systems to maintenance for your current sump pump. Your sump pump should be professionally maintained at least once a year for optimal performance and longevity.

Sewage Ejector Pumps & Grinder Pumps

Sewage ejector pumps and grinder pumps are often mistakenly referred to interchangeably. While they perform the same function, they do so in a very different way and have very different purposes. Sewage pumps or ejector pumps are responsible for pumping solid waste from your below-the-line point up to the sewer line itself where it can be carried away. These pumps generally function well with “softer” solids, which can be easily carried up to higher levels. These are usually what we advise for the average homeowner as they use less energy and generally can handle the needs of your home.

Grinder pumps do the same thing, but are designed to handle “harder” and larger amounts of waste. They do so using a grinder which processes the waste down into a fine slurry, making it easier to pump to higher levels. This makes them ideal for industrial or commercial applications, which may have to send greater amounts of waste to a higher point.
